Line Interactive UPS Qdion QDP 1000

As the media assure us, the engine of progress is laziness and fear. We often do not want to tear myself away from the television screen to turn off the light or the washing machine. And we came up with timers, relays, sound sensors and other, other, other. And all just in order not to get out of such a cozy chair. And fear. Especially the fear of natural disasters that may or may not happen. But the data stored by us on personal PCs often costs much more than a computer and even more so a hard drive. And we are afraid of losing them because they can be lost forever. And this fear alone makes us protect this device even from failures in the electric network, which are not so rare. And since the depreciation of the entire infrastructure that produces electricity and brings it to the end consumer does not improve (to put it mildly), protecting the computer and, therefore, the data stored on it from loss during man-made and natural disasters becomes more relevant than ever.

But many of us do not have the means to protect PCs with expensive solutions. Most require reliable, simple and most importantly cheap devices. And such products were offered to the market by FSP, which is one of the world's leading manufacturers of uninterruptible power supplies. Recently, she released a series of simple but reliable devices under the brand name Qdion, designed for not too wealthy citizens and small offices. They are based not on expensive solutions with double conversion (on-line UPS), but simpler – linearly interactive. Such devices have a simple voltage regulator (AVR) at the input, which equalizes the input voltage in a wide range without switching the device to power the load from the batteries. This stabilizes the input voltage and, to some extent, filters it, which sometimes significantly extends the life of the used batteries. The disadvantages of such solutions include the availability of time to switch to battery power, the lack of a good sine wave at the output (due to cost reduction) and incomplete filtering of the input voltage. Therefore, line-interactive UPSs are not used to protect devices that require high-quality amplitude and frequency. But they are ideal for PCs and other computer equipment.

In total, the Qdion UPS series includes 12 models with capacities from 450 to 2000 VA. In this review, we will look at the QDP 1000 model, which has an active power of 600 W (full power is 1000 VA).

The QDP 1000 model from the Qdion series manufactured by FSP comes in a cardboard box made in black and red. On its front side, it is indicated that this model is part of the QDP series and is a linearly interactive UPS. Its power on the front side of the package is not indicated, nor are any technical specifications indicated.

There are no technical parameters on the back of the box, which is very unusual. Only advertising phrases are present here, which, however, indicate the features of this UPS. Brief technical parameters and model number can be found on the side of the package, in addition, the country of manufacture is also indicated on the sticker here.

Options Qdion QDP 1000 is not very rich: a brief instruction manual, warranty card and a disk with software for monitoring and controlling the UPS. Not rich, but at the same time there is everything you need to connect and work.

The front panel of the QDP 1000 is more than simple. It contains the name of the UPS series, an on / off button and three red, yellow and green LEDs. These colors indicate in which mode the device is operating. And if the red LED is on, then this is an occasion to contact a specialized service regarding a UPS malfunction, of course, provided that everything is in order with the electric network. A green LED indicates that the device is operating normally and the load is being powered through the network. Yellow indicates that the UPS switched to battery power for consumers and you may urgently need to close existing programs and turn off your computer to avoid data loss.

The flip side of the QDP 1000 is also very simple. On it, in addition to the reset button, USB port and four sockets, there is nothing. The output sockets can be of two types: either IEC C13 or Schuko. In our case, these are connectors of the Schuko type.

To power the load when the mains is disconnected, this UPS uses two widespread 12 V / 7 Ah batteries. Their energy is enough for half an hour of connected devices, if their power does not exceed 120 watts.

The build quality, like all FSP products, is very high, and therefore the internal installation of the QDP 1000 is done at the proper level. The design development is also good and therefore, for example, replacing the batteries, and for this it is necessary to open the UPS, does not cause any difficulties. The main board is standard, if not for all, then for most devices in this series (which significantly reduces the cost of producing models in this series). Its parameters and reliability are naturally guaranteed.

A USB port is used to connect the UPS to a computer, through which you can not only control the device, but also control it. The program for this is included in the delivery, but you can simply download a more “fresh” version (as FSP advises), since it is free. And the port itself is supported through a small additional charge, which is not in the younger models of this series.

Testing

For testing, we used: an adjustable transformer (LATR) and an OLDI Game 760 computer based on the Intel Core-i7 7700K processor and the MSI GTX-1080 video card, which consumes 100 W in idle mode and 450 W at maximum load. The UPS itself in idle mode consumes about 20 watts, and when charging about 45 watts. As befits linear-interactive type power supplies, the quality of the output signal was almost ideal and did not depend on the magnitude of the load and the degree of discharge of the battery. The Qdion QDV-1000 operating time at a 10% load at our stand was 39 minutes. At the same time, I want to note that in the battery mode and the load slightly higher than that declared by the manufacturer, the UPS does not experience any problems and continues to operate normally.

The result of testing the operation of the AVR block of this UPS is presented in table. 2.

The transition to battery power occurs according to the parameters specified by the manufacturer, which depend on the input voltage and do not depend on the connected load. Unlike most line-interactive models, Qdion's AVR voltage boosting unit is two-stage rather than three-stage. This is likely to reduce production costs, but care must be taken to ensure that the overload does not exceed those recommended by the manufacturer, as the UPS will simply shut down.

findings

The FSP QDP 1000 model will be very useful to all those who are limited in funds, but want to protect their PC and the data stored on it from power outages as much as possible. The only drawback of this model, however, like all linear-interactive UPSs, is, albeit very small, the time to switch to battery operation. Usually they also say that at the output we do not get a perfect sine wave, which is very bad. This is not critical, since this type of device was originally designed exclusively to support computers, and for them it is completely uncritical. Therefore, the Qdion QDP 1000 UPS will be a good choice for many consumers. By the way, despite the fact that FSP has a similar model under its own brand, the uninterruptible power supply Qdion has a lower cost. Moreover, its price is very affordable – just a little more than 4 thousand rubles.
