Moreover, the closure of services is a fairly common occurrence, so it is always more reliable to store data near you than somewhere in the clouds. NAS devices have been successfully developed over the years, with most of them still working in home and corporate networks, despite their decent age. It should be noted that despite the emergence and spread of cloud services, NAS still remain very popular in the market. What is a NAS? For example, it can be a mail server, a web server, a virtualization server, a control center for CCTV cameras, a VPN server and many other additional functions.

We can not ignore the fact that modern NAS can provide users with their own cloud storage, when device users have access to NAS data via the global Internet. Such a small private cloud is sometimes more in demand than the full services of large companies. By the way, single-disk NAS almost went out of fashion, as they have one important drawback, namely the lack of data backup. Of course, you can connect an external drive and back up to it, but this is already from the “do it yourself” area, and the reliability of such a hybrid is slightly lower than that of a full dual-disk NAS. Therefore, network drives with two, four or eight drives are suitable for most users. Moreover, most modern NAS manufacturers have very advanced systems for expanding volumes through the use of hybrid RAID arrays.

Recall that the term “RAID” appeared more than 20 years ago – in 1987, when American researchers Patterson, Gibson, and Katz from the University of California, Berkeley, in their article “An Excessive Array of Inexpensive Disks,” described how to combine several cheap hard drives into one logical device so that as a result the capacity and speed of the system increase, and the failure of individual disks does not lead to a failure of the entire system. Fault tolerance in RAID arrays is achieved due to redundancy, that is, part of the disk space capacity is reserved for official purposes, becoming inaccessible to the user. Improving the performance of the disk subsystem is ensured by the simultaneous operation of several disks, and in this sense, the more disks in the array (up to a certain limit), the better. In accordance with different types of access, there are different types of RAID arrays, which are usually characterized by RAID levels. In addition to the type of access, RAID levels differ in the way they place and generate redundant information. Excessive information can either be located on a dedicated drive, or distributed among all drives.

There are currently several RAID levels that are widely used, such as RAID 0, RAID 1, RAID 5, RAID 6, RAID 10, RAID 50, and RAID 60. Previously, RAID 2, RAID 3, and RAID 4 were also used, however these RAID levels are not currently used and modern RAID controllers do not support them. Note that all modern RAID controllers also support the JBOD (Just a Bench Of Disks) feature. In this case, we are not talking about a RAID array, but simply about connecting individual drives to the controller.

Modern NAS devices support most types of RAID arrays, however, unlike full-fledged RAID controllers installed in servers, the RAID array in most NAS is created by software. This allows you to create combined RAID types almost on the fly, as well as provide opportunities for migration from one type of RAID to another. However, it must be understood that in this case the entire calculation of the data falls on the central processor, and RAM is used as a buffer. This implies another important point – the more efficient the central NAS processor (the amount of RAM is also important), the higher the data transfer rate can be obtained when accessing the data.

From the foregoing, the following conclusion can be drawn: a modern NAS is a versatile device that provides the user with a ton of opportunities and, in fact, is a sort of network center in an apartment or office. Since the capabilities of a modern NAS are sufficiently dependent on the hardware platform used, in the manufacturers' lines the devices are mainly divided taking into account the hardware installed in the device. In order not to be unfounded, within the framework of this article we will take the line of NAS of one of the well-known manufacturers – the company ASUSTOR, and on the example of its products we will see what modern NAS offer in the network drive market for home users and small offices.

We have already written about ASUSTOR products more than once, and its history originates from the notorious ASUS company, when in 2011 the network data storage market was enriched with the new ASUSTOR brand. Being a separate company exclusively engaged in the production of high-performance network drives, ASUSTOR is very closely connected with the well-known company ASUSTeK, because, in fact, it is a division focused on a specific market segment. Recall that previously, ASUSTeK was practically not involved in the production of network drives – its range includes the only model ASUS M25, which we talked about several years ago. Despite the fact that at that time a large number of manufacturers of network drives were present on the market, ASUSTOR has successfully begun its expansion into this market and currently occupies a leading position in this segment. It should be noted that from the very beginning ASUSTOR immediately set about releasing solutions on the x86 platform with Intel Atom processors, which traditionally have a high cost, but at the same time ensure high performance of the disk subsystem. However, an important factor in the success of a ready-made solution is not only the productive hardware of network drives, but also the software environment and its subsequent support from the manufacturer, which directly affect the final performance and cost of the products. And if large market players already have time-tested software solutions, then ASUSTOR needed to create something really worthwhile. As time has shown, the company's engineers succeeded, and its proprietary operating system ADM was very competitive.

ASUSTOR devices are conventionally divided into four large lineups. Each model range includes several devices that differ in the number of installed drives, the type of case, as well as the hardware configuration and additional features. In addition, the model range also includes the separation of devices into different families, but in general, NAS, as a rule, are very similar to each other. While relatively inexpensive home-oriented models have a tower version, more advanced models are made in the format of server enclosures U, which allows you to install them in server racks. The models of this line are distinguished by a relatively low cost, which is due to the hardware platform used in them. For example, the AS1002T and AS1004T are equipped with Marvell ARM processors. The relatively old models of the AS-20X and AS-30X series are based on Intel Atom processors, but the new series, which includes the AS3102T and AS3104T, is built on 2-core Intel Celeron processors.

Accordingly, the AS1002T and AS1004T models can be attributed to the most initial NAS devices, which are limited by processor performance. Nevertheless, even these models provide ample opportunities for working in a network environment. Moreover, their distinctive feature is a low noise level compared to more expensive models that need active cooling.

Together with the new Intel Celeron performance processors, the new generation of NAS, namely AS3102T and AS3104T, received support for AES-NI hardware encryption. On the other hand, models of the AS-20X and AS-30X series (AS-202T, AS-202TE, AS-204T, AS-204TE, AS-302T, AS-304T) have external baskets for installed drives, and processors installed in them Intel Atom is not much inferior in performance Intel Celeron.

A few words about the new line AS3102T and AS3104T. Both models are built on a single hardware platform: the Intel Celeron processor of the Braswell generation and 2 GB of RAM, which works in dual channel mode. The design is made in a dark style, with the code name Black Diamond ("Black Diamond"). Previously, we saw the same type of design with ASUS wireless network routers.

Both models are positioned by the company as productive and economical NAS with hardware encryption support and 4K video playback function. If hardware encryption is due to the use of new Intel Celeron processors, then these devices have an HDMI output on the rear panel for video playback. Unlike the AS2, AS3, and AS6 line devices, the AS3102T and AS3104T models now support 1080p HD playback with multi-channel high definition sound (5.1 / 7.1).

We can’t ignore that hardware encryption, thanks to which all files are protected from the moment they get to the NAS, and confidential data do not fall into the wrong hands, provides speeds of about 112 MB / s in read operations and 71 MB / s in write operations, combining data protection with considerable performance.

For home use and experienced users

Another line of ASUSTOR NAS drives is also targeted at home users. It includes several models that differ in hardware configuration and positioning.

Two new models AS3202T and AS3204T are based on 4-core Intel Celeron processors, which work in conjunction with 2 GB of RAM standard DDR3L. These models can be recommended to novice users who want to get high performance and wide functionality. Like all new ASUSTOR NAS models, they have hardware encryption support, an HDMI interface for outputting video in 1080p format and high-speed USB 3.0 ports. About the model were released to the market not so long ago, therefore, made in the new Black Diamond design and have hidden compartments for installing drives.

The flagship model of this lineup is the AS6104T. It is based on the 4-core Intel Celeron processor with an increased frequency relative to other processors used in this line. In addition, it has 2 GB of DDR3L RAM installed as a separate SO-DIMM. Moreover, the use of hardware encryption does not significantly affect performance, therefore, even in this mode, the write speed is above 130 MB / s. This model has a younger brother – AS6102T, which is based on a 2-core processor, but also supports memory expansion by installing additional modules. It is also worth noting that these models are equipped with an optical S / PDIF audio port and HDMI 1.4b output, which provides perfect 4K video playback and an excellent digital entertainment experience.

Network drives of the AS50 series (AS5004T, AS5008T, AS5010T) stand out a bit from the rest of the models. The thing is that they have four Ethernet ports at once, which allows them to be used with several providers and local networks. The hardware platform in these models also has good performance due to the possibility of expanding RAM up to 8 GB (the base is 1 GB) and a powerful 2-core Intel Celeron processor operating at high frequency.

For experienced users and business

Network drives of this model range are focused primarily on small businesses, but many computer enthusiasts choose these devices for creating home networks. This is due to the fact that NAS from this line have wide functionality with very high performance.

The AS51 NAS series includes several models: AS5102T, AS5104T, AS5108T, AS5110T. AS6204T и другие модели серии AS62ХХ, являются логичным продолжением модели ASUSTOR AS-604T, рассмотренной нами четыре года назад. Безусловно, существенное увеличение производительности за счет установки новых 4-ядерных процессоров Intel Celeron, а также большого объема памяти (4 Гбайт) позволило существенно повысить производительность моделей.

Новые модели серии AS62ХХ (AS6202T, AS6204T, AS6208T, AS6210T) получили поддержку шифрования, аппаратное ускорение для кодеков H.264 MPEG-2 и, конечно, возможность  расширения оперативной памяти до 8 Гбайт (два модуля по 4 Гбайт).Кроме того, как и остальные NAS от ASUSTOR последнего поколения, новые модели поддерживают воспроизведение видео ультравысокой четкости 4K с многоканальным звуком для максимального погружения в виртуальный мир или фильм.

Тем не менее эти модели уже ближе к корпоративному классу, так как поддерживают аппаратное и программное обеспечение корпоративного класса и совместимы со средами виртуальных систем хранения данных VMware, Citrix и Hyper-V. ISCSI/IP-SAN и поддержка NFS позволяют им бесшовно интегрироваться с существующими ИТ-средами, предоставляя оптимальное и экономичное решение хранения.

Сетевые накопители AS6204R поставляются в двух модификациях: AS6204RS и AS6204RD. Различие между ними заключается в количестве блоков питания — у модели AS6204RD их два, а у AS6204RS только один. Девятидисковая модель AS-609RS/AS-609RD также рассчитана на установку в серверные стойки. Начинка устройств состоит из 2-ядерного процессора Intel Atom и 1 Гбайт оперативной памяти, которая может быть расширена до 3 Гбайт. Эта модель подойдет именно для хранения данных, так как ее производительность уступает новым моделям.

Для малого и среднего бизнеса

Этот модельный ряд NAS от компании ASUSTOR ориентирован на малые и средние предприятия, так как производительность данных устройств избыточна для домашнего пользователя. Высокопроизводительные модели сетевых накопителей линейки AS7 стоят отдельно от остальных. Все дело в аппаратной конфигурации — ведь в основе AS7004T, AS7008T и AS7010T лежит 2-ядерный процессор Intel Core i3. Для систем хранения данных его производительности с лихвой хватает для решения любых задач. Две старшие модели AS7008T и AS7010T также имеют  дополнительный слот расширения PCIe для установки сетевых карт стандарта 10 Gb Ethernet. Базовая комплектация включает модуль оперативной памяти SO-DIMM стандарта DDR3 объемом 2 Гбайт. Однако при необходимости оперативная память может быть увеличена до 16 Гбайт (два модуля по 8 Гбайт).

Модель сетевого накопителя AS6212RD была выпущена совсем недавно. Она базируется на 4-ядерном процессоре Intel Celeron и обладает 4 Гбайт оперативной памяти с возможностью расширения до 8 Гбайт. В целом по начинке она практически повторяет другие модели семейства AS62, но предназначена для установки в серверных комнатах.

Высокая производительность модели позволяет использовать ее для защиты данных критически важных цифровых активов, а также как комплексное решение для резервного копирования и поддержки систем виртуализации.

Сетевой накопитель AS7009RD можно отнести к классу самых высокопроизводительных устройств, так как он базируется на полноценном процессоре Intel Core i3 с поддержкой буферизованной памяти стандарта UDIMM DDR3. Версия AS7009RDX является еще более мощной вариацией этого накопителя, так как в нем установлен процессор Intel Xeon и оперативная буферизованная память UDIMM DDR3 с поддержкой функции коррекции ошибок ECC. Эти модели обладают четырьмя сетевыми контроллерами Gigabite Ethernet, которые могут быть дополнены сетевыми платами стандарта 10Gb Ethernet.
