Apple iPhone 14 Max preview: Bigger, but not “Pro”

Plenty of intel suggests that Apple is going to introduce a new iPhone 14 Max model on September 7’s iPhone 14 series event, to fill the slot of the now-retired mini.

Not to be confused with the iPhone 14 Pro Max, this new iPhone 14 Max is about to fill a gap that apparently Apple considers important enough.

If you want to learn what the iPhone 14 Max is all about – you’re in the right place! Here we’ve done an early preview of Apple’s newest model, which will turn into a full review once the phone is available (and if it comes to fruition in the first place).

iPhone 14 Max Specs

Basically – it’s bigger than an iPhone 14, with a bigger screen and battery, yet lesser than an iPhone 14 Pro. Keep in mind those specs are based on leaks and rumors, and will only be officially confirmed on September 7. We’ll update this specs table with Apple’s official iPhone 14 Pro specs then (or sooner, if the specs get leaked).

iPhone 14 Max Design & Colors

The iPhone 14 Max is likely to remain with the notch we’re so familiar with, just like the base iPhone 14. Based on rumors, we can only reasonably expect the Pro and Pro Max iPhones to drop the notch and replace it with a !-shaped holepunch.

So, we’ll basically have a familiar design here, likely nearly identical to the iPhone 13 Pro Max, but with a dual-camera on the back.

The iPhone 14 Max will be big, with a premium-feeling glass and metal design, flat edges, and a slight camera bump on the back. On the bottom, a Lightning port is likely to return, for charging and data transfer.

On the front, around its nearly-7-inch display will be small black bezels, and again – a very familiar notch.

As for color options, here’s what we know and expect right now…

iPhone 14 Max colors:

  • Green
  • Purple
  • Blue
  • Black
  • White
  • Product Red

Check back later, after September 7, when we would’ve been able to confirm the official iPhone 14 Max colors, as those above have been merely suggested by an unverified leaker.

iPhone 14 Max Display

So the iPhone 14 Max will essentially be just like the 14 Pro Max and the 13 Pro Max in terms of size, only its internals will be nerfed. With that in mind, we expect to be getting a 6.7-inch OLED display, likely 60Hz, although 120Hz refresh rate has been speculated. That one would be pretty optimistic, considering Apple likely wants to differentiate (and elevate) the Pro models from the base iPhone 14 and 14 Max.

Still, that OLED display will be glass-covered, big and beautiful, with pitch blacks and vibrant colors, as can be expected from OLED screen technology.

As for its pixel resolution, we can reasonably expect something akin to the iPhone 13 Pro Max, namely 2778-by-1284 pixels, 19.5:9 screen aspect ratio, 457 pixels per inch (PPI).

Always-on display has been speculated, and might appear on the 14 Pro and Pro Max, but is unlikely for the iPhone 14 Max. Nonetheless, True Tone will return, as well as HDR support.

Stay tuned for our full review, when we’ll fully test its brightness, color accuracy, and more.

iPhone 14 Max Camera

It’s reasonable to expect that the iPhone 14 Max will have the exact same dual camera set-up as the iPhone 14. We can expect a wide main camera, and a secondary ultra-wide.

New features coming to the iPhone 14 series, such as astrophotography, are highly likely to only be supported on the Pro and Pro Max, so not on this one.

Still, this iPhone won’t be a slouch when it comes to photo image quality and video recordings, as even the base current iPhone crushes most, if not all of the competition. 60FPS, 4K video recording with HDR will be present.

iPhone 14 Max Performance & Benchmarks

We’re yet to know for sure if the iPhone 14 Max will get a new Apple A16 Bionic processor, or will be packing an older one from earlier iPhones, such as the A15. Regardless, as with all flagship iPhones, we can expect buttery-smooth performance and no hiccups.

While the iPhone 14 Max will have lesser specs on paper than the Pro and Pro Max, those will be unnoticeable in real life usage. Stay tuned for our full review, when we’ll test how it measures up against them, and against other modern flagships from the Android world.

iPhone 14 Max OS

The iPhone 14 Max will come with the brand new iOS 16 operating system (OS), which notably brings customizable lock screens with Apple Watch-like widgets to the iPhone.

Check out our iOS 16 preview article for a comprehensive list of all the new features coming to this, and other supported iPhones.

iPhone 14 Max Battery

With its bigger size, the iPhone 14 Max will also come with a bigger battery than the base iPhone 14, likely to be on par, or perhaps larger than the 14 Pro Max’s battery.

Currently we’re expecting it to be about 4,352 mAh, and if you value battery life, this phone will definitely be one to consider. Older iPhone models with that same battery size are already some of our best performers in our battery life benchmarks, and if this iPhone 14 Max happens to get a newer, more power-efficient processor – even better.

It’s plausible that the iPhone 14 Max will be one of the best, if not the best-performing modern iPhones when it comes to battery life, but with that, we should also expect it to be among the heavier ones too, at least among the iPhone 14 series.

iPhone 14 Max Charging Speeds

The iPhone 14 Max will support wireless charging, in addition to wired charging. We can’t confirm the actual charging speeds just yet, but leakers have led us to expect about 30W wired charging – nothing special.

And, even though it hardly needs mentioning these days, Apple will not supply buyers with a charger out of the box, just a Lightning-to-USB-C charging cable. So people will have to supply their own 30W charger to take advantage of the iPhone 14 Max’s maximum charging speed.

iPhone 14 Max Audio Quality

In the audio quality department, nothing is likely to change, which is not a bad thing either. iPhones, especially bigger models like this one, have historically offered the best-quality speakers, with solid loudness and even a hint of bass, compared to other flagships on the market.

Once again we can expect a bottom-firing main speaker on the bottom of the iPhone 14 Max, with its earpiece doubling as a second speaker from inside the notch. While the earpiece never sounds as loud and full as a “real” dedicated speaker, it helps with creating a stereo effect when watching videos or movies.

If it even needs mentioning these days – the iPhone 14 Max will not have a headphone jack, but of course, you’ll be able to Bluetooth-pair any wireless headphones (such as AirPods) or speakers you have lying around.

iPhone 14 Max Summary

The iPhone 14 Max is shaping up to be an interesting beast – perfect for the right people who want a bigger screen and battery, but don’t wish to pay extra for any “Pro” bells and whistles. It’s most likely going to be as big as the iPhone 14 Pro Max, just with the base iPhone 14’s specs and feature set.

Stay tuned for updates and our full review, when we’ll really find out of this new iPhone model is worth saving some money on, over the iPhone 14 Pro Max.
