So, there we go, Apple finally introduced a new iPhone 14 Plus model (previously speculated to be named iPhone 14 Max), to fill the spot left by the now-retired iPhone mini. It’s basically the bigger brother of the base iPhone 14, as it’s quite similar to it in many aspects, apart from the screen size.

If you want to learn what the iPhone 14 Plus is all about – you’re in the right place! Here we’ve done an early preview of Apple’s newly-announced iPhone model, which will turn into a full review very soon.

iPhone 14 Plus Design & Colors

The official iPhone 14 Plus colors

Unlike the more expensive iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max, the iPhone 14 Plus remains with the notch we’re so familiar with.

We basically have a generally last-gen design here, virtually identical to the 2021 iPhone 13 Pro Max visually, except the new Plus has a dual-camera on the back, as opposed to three cameras.

The iPhone 14 Plus has one main, defining feature over the base iPhone 14, and that’s its larger size. Despite being cheaper than the Pro models, the iPhone 14 Plus still sports a premium Ceramic Shield front, a glass back, aluminum sides, flat edges, and a slight camera bump on the back. On the bottom, the Lightning port returns, for charging and data transfer.

On the front, around its nearly-7-inch display are some small black bezels, and again – the last-gen iPhones’ notch.

As for color options, here’s what we get…

So the iPhone 14 Plus is essentially just like the 14 Pro Max and the 13 Pro Max in terms of size, only its internals are nerfed to match its lower price. We’re getting a 6.7-inch OLED display clocked at the traditional 60Hz refresh rate. It’s a Super Retina XDR display, with a 2778‑by‑1284-pixel resolution and 458 PPI (pixels per inch).

Still big and beautiful, with pitch blacks and vibrant colors, as can be expected from OLED screen technology.

Always-on display was speculated, but as we could’ve seen a mile away, it came only to the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max. Nonetheless, True Tone returns, as well as HDR support.

Stay tuned for our full review, when we’ll fully test the iPhone 14 Plus’ screen brightness, color accuracy, and more.

iPhone 14 Plus Camera

The iPhone 14 Plus comes with a dual camera array on the back, which, like most other things, is exactly the same as on the base iPhone 14. We have a 12-megapixel main camera with OIS (optical image stabilization), and a 12-megapixel ultra wide (120° field of view).

The iPhone 14 Plus has 2x optical zoom, and up to 5x digital zoom, so while it can’t be a zooming champ like some of its competition, it’s not a slouch either.

It’s capable of up to 60FPS, 4K video recording, and even supports Cinematic mode at up to 4K HDR at 30 fps too. So while it’s not as “Pro” as the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max, the iPhone 14 Plus is still surely quite the photo capturing, video recording beast when compared to most other phones on the market.

iPhone 14 Plus Performance & Benchmarks

Unlike its more expensive brothers, the iPhone 14 Plus comes with the old Apple A15 Bionic processor, which is still a very powerful one, to be fair. We’re also getting 6GB of RAM on board.

While the iPhone 14 Plus expectedly has lesser specs on paper than the Pro and Pro Max, those will be unnoticeable in real life usage. But stay tuned for our full review, when we’ll test how it measures up against them, and against other modern flagships from the Android world.

iPhone 14 Plus OS

iOS 16 brings customizable lock screens and lock screen widgets

The iPhone 14 Plus comes with the brand new iOS 16 operating system (OS), which notably brings customizable lock screens with Apple Watch-like widgets to the iPhone.

Check out our iOS 16 preview article for a comprehensive list of all the new features coming to this, and other supported iPhones.

iPhone 14 Plus Battery

With its bigger size, the iPhone 14 Plus also comes with a bigger battery than the base iPhone 14 – 4,352 mAh to be precise. So if you value battery life, this phone will definitely be one to consider. Older iPhone models with that same battery size are already some of our best performers in our battery life benchmarks…

So it’s plausible that the iPhone 14 Plus will be one of the best, if not the best-performing modern iPhone when it comes to battery life, but again – stay tuned for our review that’s coming soon. We’ll see how that battery holds up in both real-life usage and in our tests, but it’s looking good.

iPhone 14 Plus Charging Speeds

The iPhone 14 Plus comes with wireless charging, in addition to wired charging. We’re getting 20W wired charging, and 15W wireless charging; in order words – nothing special.

And, even though it hardly needs mentioning these days, Apple will not supply buyers with a charger out of the box, just a Lightning-to-USB-C charging cable. So people will have to supply their own 20W charger (or higher) to take advantage of the iPhone 14 Plus’ maximum charging speed.

iPhone 14 Plus Audio Quality

iPhone 14 Plus (back) and the smaller iPhone 14

In the audio quality department, nothing has changed, which is not a bad thing either. iPhones, especially bigger models like this one, have historically offered the best-quality speakers, with solid loudness and even a hint of bass, compared to other flagships on the market.

As per usual, we get a bottom-firing main speaker on the bottom of the iPhone 14 Plus, with its earpiece doubling as a second speaker from inside that notch. While the earpiece never sounds as loud and full as a “real” dedicated speaker, it helps with creating a stereo effect when watching videos or movies.

If it even needs mentioning these days – the iPhone 14 Plus does not have a headphone jack, but of course, you’ll be able to Bluetooth-pair any wireless headphones (such as Apple’s own AirPods) or speakers that you may have lying around.

iPhone 14 Plus Summary

The iPhone 14 Plus is shaping up to be an interesting beast – perfect for the right people who want a bigger screen and battery, but don’t wish to pay extra for any “Pro” bells and whistles. It’s most likely going to be as big as the iPhone 14 Pro Max, just with the base iPhone 14’s specs and feature set.

Stay tuned for our full review, when we’ll really find out if this new iPhone model is worth saving some money on over the iPhone 14 Pro Max, yet shedding some extra cash for over the base iPhone 14.
